Wellness in Children: Why Maple Bear Cares About Nutrition and a Healthy Lifestyle

Posted in Maple Bear Global on Monday, July 10th, 2023

As an early learning center, Maple Bear Global Schools care deeply about each child’s health and well-being. Education is essential, but so is nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. Continue reading to learn how Maple Bear incorporates wellness into all its programs and prioritizes nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.

Maple Bear is Not a Children Wellness Center

Maple Bear is not a children’s wellness center, but we support children’s wellness through our curriculum and a solid commitment to community involvement.

For example, Maple Bear Singapore hosted a virtual workshop on August 27, 2022, for 30 parents of the children who attend our preschool.

During the talk, Sherlyn Quek, Maple Bear’s resident school nutritionist, shared tips on strengthening the immune system through nutrition. She explained how a well-balanced diet of high-fiber, plant-rich foods, including fruits, vegetables, and legumes, combined with probiotic and prebiotic foods, helps to strengthen the immune system and stave off disease.

Ms. Quek also stressed that eating many processed foods, refined sugar, and red meat without many fruits and vegetables can produce an imbalance in intestinal microorganisms and cause disease. Maple Bear supports the Healthy Plate Concept, which includes one portion of brown rice or whole-meal bread, meat, and two portions of fruits and vegetables.

With our workshops, handouts, and in-class learning, we hope positive messaging around health and wellness goes beyond the classroom and into the home.

Nutrition Health and Safety for Young Children

Children are naturally curious; when they are young, it is time to instill the importance of nutrition, health, and safety. It can be done easily by incorporating those messages into everyday activities such as mealtimes, play, and education sessions.

One way to help children learn how to live a healthy life is to allow them to help make a meal. Make it colorful and fill the plate with various healthy foods.

During playtime, show kids how running, jumping, climbing, and stretching is good for their body.

Encourage children throughout the day to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Talk about social connections and how playing with others can promote good mental and physical well-being and healthy social skills.

Maple Bear’s Wellness Programs for Children

Children learn about health and wellness through everyday activities and Maple Bear’s programs in various ways. At mealtime, healthy eating is discussed. Foods rich in nutrients are served during lunch and snack time.

Children take breaks throughout the day, reinforcing that rest is essential to a healthy body and brain.

As part of Maple Bear’s programs, we also incorporate topics about stress management and adopting a healthy lifestyle, including good nutrition, plenty of sleep, and safety.

One thing that makes Maple Bear different is allowing children to be curious, explore, experiment, and learn how to problem solve in a safe, secure environment on their schedule. These core principles also help to foster an understanding of health and wellness. As children become more self-aware, they can make better decisions about their wants and make healthier choices.

Maple Bear Schools operate on the highest standards for quality and excellence. Our curriculum is based on the Canadian method of education focused on immersion learning instead of memorization or language instruction. Our curriculum programs are constantly evaluated and updated with the latest educational research and best practices.

We offer both an infant care program and a preschool core curriculum. Our infant care program, Bear Care, serves children ages 6 weeks to 24 months. Bear Care features programs that focus on physically, cognitively, emotionally, and socially engaging with very young ones. Our preschool curriculum focuses on English language arts, personal and social development, science and technology, creative arts, physical skills, well-being, mathematics, and language development and acquisition.

All our programs focus on health, safety, and children’s wellness.
